FACET

= Flavourings, Additives and food Contact materials Exposure Task

The 7th Framework EU funded project will estimate exposure to flavours, additives and food contact materials across Europe.

The concept behind this project is the creation of a food chemical exposure surveillance system, sustainable beyond the life of the project, which covers representative regions of the EU and which will meet, to the highest possible standard, the needs of the EU regulatory authorities in the protection of consumer health.

This project started on the 1st September 2008 and will last for 4 years.

The Lead Coordinator of the project is Prof. Mike Gibney, University College Dublin, and the FACET consortium consists of 20 collaborative partners across the EU. The partners are formed from industrial, academic and public body research centers.

Objective

Provide the EU with a sustainable surveillance system, to estimate target food chemical intake.

The project has 3 main groups:

  • “Chemicals” group: Prioritisation of flavourings, additives and food contact materials for investigation and the food categories applicable to them.

  • “Food” group: Establishment of food ingredient occurrence data of the  food categories through:

- collection of food packaging material and recording of all food ingredients in purchased foods
- creation of a food consumption databases linked to the target food categories

  • Group on chemical concentration”: Provide data on the concentration of target chemicals in target food groups.

Databases on food intake, food chemical occurrence and food chemical concentration will be linked in algorithms and converted into computer code → Estimation of probabilistic exposure to target food chemical intake.
