Migration Modelling, Theoretical Migrates from Adhesives in Food Packaging.

In July 2010 the European adhesives industry, under the auspices of its European association FEICA, successfully completed a three year project to evaluate substance migration and develop a mathematical modelling tool for use by the food packaging industry to determine the level of any potential substance migration from adhesives commonly used in food packaging.

Involving 21 partners (adhesives companies, associations and academic institutes) across eight countries, the joint industry-European Commission funded project effectively demonstrates that mathematical modelling can predict and calculate potential substance migration.

The full results of the study will be announced in autumn 2010, but in the meantime training has been delivered across Europe to companies in the food packaging supply chain and the free shareware made readily available to interested companies.

Some questions arising from unhelpful reports in three British newspapers following an article in the British Royal Society of Chemistry’s Journal of Materials Chemistry have been fully answered. The RSC report explained the role of one of the project partners, Saragoza University, and the methodology it adopted for its part of the project. More detail may be viewed in the latest FEICA Press Release.

The FEICA study was initiated by the adhesives industry as its contribution towards any possible future pan-European standard or legislation. Further development of the Migration Tool is under consideration.
